How to build a reseller or channel partner program

A reseller program extends the sales motion through third parties. Because the partner is more involved in the buying process, the program needs stronger selection, enablement and deal-governance rules than a simple affiliate program.

1. Define the reseller role

Clarify whether partners source, influence, sell, implement or support the customer. The commercial model and training depend on that role.

2. Recruit for capability

Assess customer access, sales skill, product adjacency, services capability and willingness to invest in training.

3. Create deal-registration rules

Define eligible deals, duplicate handling, registration duration, ownership conflicts and required CRM information.

4. Build training and certification

Teach product positioning, qualification, demo or sales responsibilities, implementation boundaries and escalation paths.

5. Provide co-selling resources

Give partners approved assets, product updates and a clear way to engage your internal team on active opportunities.

6. Measure the channel

Track active resellers, registered pipeline, win rate, revenue, time to first deal and concentration across partners.
